7 Surprising Habits That Instantly Boost Your Sense of Wealth
Transform your mindset with 7 habits that make you feel wealthier every day—no extra money needed.
“The more you own, the more it owns you.” – Henry David Thoreau
A sense of wealth is subjective, and that’s the good news.
It means there are strategies to feel wealthier without earning more money. And that’s a relief because shifting your perspective is often easier than increasing your income.
So, how can you feel wealthier by adjusting your mindset? Below, I’ve outlined seven surprising habits that can make you feel instantly richer.
1. Expand Your Living Space – Within Your Own Home
Minimalism grants you more space – both physically and mentally.
Living only with possessions that add value can create a spacious home environment. Say goodbye to unnecessary items, excessive decorations, extra cabinets, and unused gadgets.
In a world where almost everyone can access affordable goods, a tidy and minimalist home has become a symbol of luxury. The most luxurious spaces (high-end boutiques, five-star hotels, expensive homes in magazines) are not cluttered but spacious and elegantly sparse.
In a home with fewer distractions, you’ll feel more at peace and, by extension, richer. And it’s easy to start:
- Grab a few boxes.
- Go through your belongings.
- Recycle items that hold little value.
- Put things you seldom use or no longer want into a box.
- Once the box is full, close it and set it aside for six weeks.
- If you don’t need anything from the box during that time, take it to a local thrift store.
There you go – instant decluttering satisfaction.
Decluttering and minimizing make you feel wealthier because:
- You’re surrounded only by items you genuinely value.
- Your home feels more extensive and more open.
- Your living space gains a calm, luxurious ambiance.
2. Live Every Day Like You’re on Vacation
Time is our most incredible wealth. We all have a limited amount of it, and every minute is unique.
Yet, the average person in the Netherlands spends 2 hours daily on social media. That’s more than 91 full 8-hour workdays per year spent scrolling and swiping.
Social media is a popular pastime, but many other activities consume a significant portion of our time:
- The average Dutch person also spends 2 hours a day watching TV, not counting time spent on streaming services. (About 9 years ago I got rid of my TV. Which saves me a lot of time, space and a lot of stress.)
- Many people spend considerable time checking and responding to (often unnecessary) emails.
Shopping (both online and offline) is another time-consuming activity for many. Comparing products, reading reviews, hunting for the best deals, and handling returns all add up and are often costly.
- Constantly reacting to notifications from messages and news alerts takes up a lot of time in many people’s daily routines.
We all have a finite amount of time on this earth. One simple question can help you make better use of it:
“Is this how I want to spend my precious life?”
You don’t have to give up social media if it brings you joy. But you can explore how to spend more time on activities that genuinely make you happy.
Does that TikTok session bring you joy? Or would you prefer to spend that time doing something else? Like reading, practicing yoga, cooking, walking, decluttering, studying, playing, connecting with loved ones, writing, or enjoying a great movie?
The more critically you assess how you spend your time, the more of it you seem to have. The more of this time you can reclaim, the more accessible you feel. And there’s a bonus: time seems to slow down with less scattered media consumption.
By being more mindful about how you spend your time, you suddenly feel like you have endless hours—much like those lazy summer vacations when you were a kid. An hour on TikTok feels utterly different from reading without distractions.
So, how do you begin?
- Reduce notifications and distracting apps on your smartphone.
- Place your phone on a shelf when you come home.
- Commit to only using your smartphone when standing by that shelf.
- Find other valuable activities for you, and do them without your smartphone nearby.
- Plan a screen-free evening. Read a book or play a board game!
- Gradually increase these screen-free moments.
You can reclaim so much time and peace that it feels like you’re always on vacation! Looking for tips on how to reduce distractions and use your time more mindfully?

3. Increase Your Financial Freedom – Month by Month
Simplifying your life makes it much easier to live below your means. This approach automatically helps you build a savings buffer, creating a greater sense of freedom.
Because even though you’re saving money and not spending it, you’re still gaining something valuable in return. You’re buying freedom. A healthy savings buffer makes you feel more prosperous.
- You feel more accessible.
- You feel less anxious about financial matters.
- You know that you could buy whatever you want if you chose to, but you also realize that the freedom your savings provide is priceless.

4. Savor the Luxury of Inner Peace
We often believe that more wealth will bring us more peace. But in reality, many wealthy individuals are burdened with responsibilities, making inner peace challenging.
However, you can cultivate the luxury of inner peace on your own. It begins with minimizing distractions.
But there’s more you can do:
- Take a walk every day, ideally without music or a podcast. A simple walk helps your mind relax.
- Regularly check in with yourself. Relax your body, breathe deeply, and bring your focus back to the present moment.
- Incorporate a form of meditation into your daily routine. Just a few minutes of meditation can quickly lead to greater inner peace.
- Practice gratitude daily. The more gratitude you feel, the richer and calmer you’ll become.
Regarding inner peace, good habits are more valuable than money.
5. Craft Meaningful Memories
What’s the point of being extremely wealthy if you spend your only life working away in an office behind a screen? You might have a high income, but does that equate to a rich life?
We pursue wealth because it enables us to have beautiful experiences. But if creating meaningful experiences is the goal, money is often not the most significant obstacle:
- A potluck dinner with close friends costs little but can result in a delightful evening.
- A picnic is often more enjoyable than dining in a fancy restaurant.
- Nature is either free or very inexpensive.
- The more you can appreciate each moment (mindfulness), the less you need to feel content.
We can feel more prosperous by shifting our focus towards creating meaningful memories with those we care about.
Truly embrace life – with more adventure, fulfillment, and joy.
“Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.” – Buddha
6. Invest in Quality and Luxurious Simplicity
When you own fewer things and spend your money more thoughtfully, you suddenly have room for unexpected luxuries.
You might, for instance, invest in a small, high-quality wardrobe. Or a few exquisite pieces of furniture that genuinely make you happy. Often, these items last longer, saving you money in the long run. This also means you can usually find these items second-hand, getting even more value for less money.
Focusing your income on a few key areas that matter most to you can significantly enhance your quality of life.
7. Live Life Without Regrets
The more your life revolves around creating meaningful experiences with great people, the more valuable it will feel when you reflect on it.
Such a life isn’t centered around status but rather on relationships, personal growth, and enjoyment. When you reach the end of your life, you’ll have the luxury of looking back without regrets.
Because in the end, it doesn’t matter how much money you have. The beautiful moments spent with your loved ones in good health define true wealth.
Live mindfully and with gratitude; your life will quickly become more prosperous. And if you happen to save some extra money along the way, that’s just a nice bonus.
“In the end, we only regret the chances we didn’t take.” – Lewis Carroll
